Jozankei Shikanoyu Hanamomiji, an inn that preserves hot springs and Japanese culture, will be hosting its first-ever "Wishing Carp Streamers" event from April 10th to May 11th, 2025, in which guests will write their wishes on strips of paper and decorate them to resemble carp streamers.

During the same period, the "Jozankei Onsen Keiryu Carp Streamers" event is held in the hot spring town, and carp streamers of all sizes brightly decorate Jozankei in the spring.

What is a wish carp streamer?

People write their wishes for themselves or their loved ones on strips of paper with carp streamers drawn on them, and then hang them in a row like the carp streamers that decorate the hot spring town.

Koinobori come in five colors: black, red, blue, yellow, and white. You can write your wishes in the color of your choice, or you can choose a color that matches your wishes for growth, academic achievement, gratitude to ancestors, or the like, like the strips of paper used for Tanabata decorations.

Please feel free to write as many wishes as you like on the strips of paper. Anyone can enjoy the event for free, including guests staying at the inn, day-trip bathers, and visitors who are just looking to see the carp streamers.

The precious strips of paper on which you have written your wishes will be collected regularly and donated to the shrine after the event.

Our thoughts

Nowadays, it is becoming rare to see carp streamers being displayed at homes. Although the form of carp streamers changes with the times, we want to convey this beautiful Japanese culture to the present.

Carp streamers are meant to celebrate the healthy growth of children, but in keeping with the auspicious carp, which is also a symbol of success in life, please write down your wishes, such as feelings for loved ones or your own goals, on strips of paper.

It inherits Japanese culture, can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of nationality or age, and passes on our thoughts to the next generation.

As a long-established inn in Jozankei, we will continue to strive for sustainable activities.

Carp streamers are donated by families who no longer need them but are filled with precious memories, and are displayed at various locations. Please enjoy the arrival of spring in Hokkaido as the colorful carp streamers float in the sky.
