[History of Hohei Kan]
Hohei Kan is the only Western-style hotel built by the Meiji government, and opened in 1881 when the Emperor Meiji visited Sapporo and Hokkaido. It is a typical wooden Western-style building in the early Meiji era, built using traditional Japanese techniques, and is designated as a national important cultural property.
It was built near the current Odori Park 1-chome and was relocated to its current location in Nakajima Park in 1958.
It is popular with Sapporo citizens as a wedding hall, and in recent years it has been reopened as an exchange facility in June 2016 after completing preservation and repair work.
Inside the Hohei Kan, you can enjoy not only the highlights of the building, such as the stucco ceiling decoration at the chandelier's hanging base, but also the reproduction exhibition of the guest rooms where Emperor Meiji stayed and the images related to the history of the Hohei Kan.
