[Hokkaido Mukawa High School x Daichi no Ice] Invented by high school students! “Hobetsu Tomorin” ice cream with a flavor familiar to locals for a long time is now on sale in Mukawa Town

September 4, 2024 ~ "Hobetetsu Tomorin" will be on sale throughout Mukawa Town

Mukawa High School , which promotes the Mukawagaku (Mukawa Studies) inquiry-based learning program in the town of Mukawa, has collaborated with Daichi no Ice (Lambel Co., Ltd.), an ice cream manufacturer that uses ingredients native to Hokkaido's soil, to create "Hobetsu Tomorin," an ice cream made using non-standard Kanro (ajiuri) melon, a local specialty of the Hobetsu area.

The project was made possible thanks to the cooperation of the Hobetsu Kanro Production Committee, which is made up of producers in the Hobetsu area, and the JA Tomakomai Regional Office, which is responsible for all sales .

Sales will begin simultaneously at roadside stations and other locations in Mukawa Town on Wednesday, September 4. Advance sales will also take place on Sunday, September 1 at the 10th Mukawa Gourmet Festival (venue: Shiki-no-Yakata parking lot), with high school students taking charge of direct sales on the day.

Inquiry learning into local issues

Hokkaido Mukawa High School is focusing on "inquiry learning," where students discover local issues in Mukawa Town and seek solutions to them. This year, two third-year female students focused on the current situation in which much of the agricultural produce grown in Mukawa Town is discarded as non-standard products, and came up with the idea of "ice cream" as a solution.

Collaboration between the local community and companies

They asked for cooperation from Daichi no Ice (Rambel), an ice cream maker that uses ingredients from Hokkaido, and this collaboration was made possible. The aim of this initiative is to make effective use of local resources by using non-standard Kanro (ajiuri gourd), a specialty of the Hobetsu region. In response to a call from JA Tomakomai Wide Area, the Hobetsu Kanro Production Committee, made up of producers from the Hobetsu region, collected non-standard Kanro as an ingredient. Leveraging their know-how in craft ice cream production, Rambel developed a recipe that brings out the flavor of Kanro, and was responsible for the entire production process.

The producer's thoughts / The appeal of "Tomorin"

Kanro has a short shelf life and is difficult to ship outside of Hokkaido, so consumption has been limited to local use. By processing it into ice cream, producers hope to increase demand and raise awareness of the product name "Tomorin."

"Tomorin" is a variety created by crossing melon and ajiuri to allow people to enjoy the "Kanro (ajiuri)" that has long been loved by locals. It has the mellow aroma of melon and the refreshing aftertaste of traditional ajiuri.

*"Tomorin" is a registered trademark of Kobayashi Farm Ltd.
